Walpole Tidal Pool
The Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, nestled in the village, stands as a notable landmark. Constructed in 1937, this Grade II listed structure spans over four acres, boasting impressive dimensions: 450 feet long, 300 feet wide at the seaward end, and extending 550 feet long at the landward end. With an approximate cost of £7,000, it was the brainchild of Margate Borough Engineer A.E. Borg. Believed to be the largest tidal pool in the UK, this aquatic marvel captivates with its unique design. During high tide, the pool's walls are entirely engulfed by the sea, creating an immersive experience for swimmers. As the tide recedes, water naturally drains through designated drainage points around the pool's edge. Adding to its allure, freshwater springs within the pool's walls contribute to its replenishment. A cherished spot for the local community, the tidal pool sees regular use throughout the year, even during the colder winter months. While a nearby car park provides convenient access, essential facilities such as showers or toilets are currently absent for pool users. Furthermore, the pool operates without a dedicated lifeguard, relying on the vigilance and responsibility of its visitors.
